Cascade Blues Association Review

Here is proof that not all blues happening in the State of Oregon comes from along the I-5 corridor. For the past thirty years Tess Barr has been mixing things up out in the Columbia River Gorge, blending her early exposures to country & western and her love of rock in her teens into her own blues format that has made her a favorite act in the clubs around Hood River and The Dalles. Tess has recently released a new CD titled Do What You Want that should make those fans very happy and win over even more.

“The Tess Barr Blues Band plays with fire, energy, heart and soul like no other. Tess brings down the house night after night with her powerful, dynamic vocal style and crowd pleasing charm while the rest of the band provides a raunchy palate for Tess to do her magic!”

“…Unfortunately, I had to leave before Tess Barr came on at 8, but according to Alastair, she and her band “can take just about any blues tune and make it their own.”…Notes On A Napkin-Post Bonnie Carter- August 2, 2010

“…Nearly a day and a half of incredible, up front and personal, Blues & Rockin sounds now have you in this state of euphoria. But hey, its not over yet, as closing the night with vocals that will give you chicken skin are the exciting, exhilarating, high energy sounds of Tess Barr and the Tess Barr Blues Band.”…CBA Blues Notes August 2010; Len Shulmeister, Pine Spring Resort

Tess Barr CD Release “Do What You Want”

February 4, 2014
Hood River, OR.
Tess Barr is very excited to announce the release of her new CD, Do What You Want. Tess is a vocalist, songwriter and guitar player from The Pacific Northwest and has been singing her entire life.

Growing up in the 60s listening to country and western music, Tess decided that rock and roll was really more her style but always felt empty until she discovered the blues in the late 70s and has never turned back. Tess has fronted many bands since, from solo gigs to large bands for over 30 years. She has also been a featured NW Woman and Blues artist and guest starred with many artists. Her beloved blues heroes Koko Taylor, Katie Webster, Janis Joplin, Elmore James, Junior Wells and Hound Dog Taylor heavily influence Tess’ singing and songwriting style.

This CD was several years in the making and consists of 12 tracks covering a broad range of her talents. Most all are her originals with the exception of the great Junior Wells song Little By Little , a regular in her live sets, that Tess and her band deliver a powerful rendition and a taste of what Tess can be like in a live performance. Several of these songs she wrote some time ago but now that she has her own studio and plenty of good musicians and engineers, she wanted them recorded and you get to enjoy them now.

There is Blues For the Avatar that Tess and her husband Patrik, who plays slide and harp on this CD, wrote that was the soundtrack for a movie of the same name from 1996. Patrik wrote one Cajun inspired song on the CD and there is also a bonus Christmas Song that got airplay during the Holidays, but as yet was unavailable.

Tess and Patrik also own and operate Hood Crest Winery, so as busy as they are, they don’t play much outside of the Pacific Northwest. Although with the excitement that this CD is generating so quickly, it might force them out on tour. Until then this CD gives you a great chance to enjoy Tess and her heartfelt music.
